I put HeyTaco! out in the world before it was ready. I shipped it.Īs someone who strives for perfection, my strengths can sometimes be my weakness. But with HeyTaco! I was able to do something that I often found hard to do (and still do). I spent countless nights and weekends building apps. I worked on projects outside of work to fill this void. No bump in salary or job promotion was going to make me feel fulfilled. I was approaching my 11th year working for financial services company The Motley Fool and was becoming restless. It's hard to believe that what was once a side project is now a business with customers from all around the world. It started out with beers.This month I celebrate the 3rd anniversary of my team building app HeyTaco!. If you look around the internet, you’ll see that they’re fun, and they make people smile. My short answer is that everyone loves tacos. Today, I’m humbled to say that there are over 2000 teams from all around the world using HeyTaco! to spread appreciation.
With the growth of Slack and the rise of chatbots, the opportunity became clear. Department of Labor, 64% of Americans who leave their jobs say they do so because they don’t feel appreciated.Īnd so, I asked myself: “Can I help people feel more appreciated?”. Not feeling valued in the workplace is a pretty big problem. The problem that resonated most with me was the lack of feeling appreciated. I knew I wanted to build products for the individual, so I started thinking about the most significant problem they face in the workplace. And so, the closer I got to the industry, the more I became frustrated with HR software. They’re made for senior leadership and HR people rather than for us, the employees. I believe this is because they’re built for the wrong person. The problem is that most of them are “top-down” solutions with little employee engagement. I saw an HR industry filled with mundane solutions intended to help employees. The Aha MomentĪfter a few months of working on the platform, something started becoming clear to me. I also realized how incredibly fulfilling it is to help people through technology. It not only feels good for me (the one building it), but also for customers.

Through that project, I discovered my passion for “feel-good” software. Working on this project was a turning point for me personally and professionally.
